Avoiding a Layoff Great Tip to Avoid a Job Search

Avoiding a Layoff â€" Great Tip to Avoid a Job Search I saw a very cool point from Susan Irelands blog, where she links to a Vault video with advice on avoiding a layoff.   From Susan Irelands post: Heres a point I especially liked: If you think your company might be heading for a round of lay-offs, sit down with your manager and ask what project is most important to the company right now. Then try to get involved in that project as your primary responsibility. If youre working on something thats of secondary importance to the survival of the company, youre more likely to get laid off. If youre working on a primary project, youre less apt to be sent packing. Brilliant! Heres the video: Thanks Susan Ireland! Whats your Strategic Narrative - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career

Whats your Strategic Narrative - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career Storytelling has been around since humans began communicating. Whether it was in the form of cave drawings or primitive grunts. The earliest stories were developed as a way to help current and future generations survive. As speech evolved, stories evolved too. Stories were developed to help share values, beliefs and even hopes and dreams. The ability to tell stories enabled humans to survive and thrive. For your professional career having the ability to tell stories is also critical for survival. Defining your strategic narrative will enhance  your communication and leadership style. A Strategic Narrative allows you to communicate your thoughts and values. Storytelling is an Art Your biggest impacts are from  stories. Why are fairy tales so easy to remember? Because they are stories. If a story begins with any of the following lines…are you likely to be intrigued and interested to hear where this goes? A long time ago … It was a dark and stormy night … Once Upon a time .. The first time I ever … Versus … these less than stellar attention grabbers: Uhhh, ummm…today we are going to go thru this powerpoint. Hold all your questions til the end…if we have time well address them then Oh…no questions please. Storytelling Works! Tell them, Show them, Watch them. Who are your storytellers? Hopefully you are your own best storyteller.  If not, work on becoming one. Work on developing your Strategic Narrative. If you are a manager of a business and  have no storytellers…find one or make one. One is just the start. Seek to identify or create several storytellers. This post is  partially inspired by this book. Lead with a Story. So … Whats your Strategic Narrative? Author: Jeff   is a veteran in the Enterprise Content Management industry. Over the past 20 years he has worked with customers and partners to design, develop and deploy solutions around the world. Jeff is currently the Director of Strategic Alliances at Winshuttle. He has worked for Microsoft, FileNet (IBM), K2, Captaris, Open Text, Kofax and Kodak. He speaks and blogs about ECM and the Intersection between Social, Mobile and Cloud Computing.

Turbo Boost Your Job Search By Finding Your Motivation

Turbo Boost Your Job Search By Finding Your Motivation One of the most frequently asked questions I hear from job seekers is how do I stay motivated? There isnt an easy answer to this question nor one that will fit everyone. On Mondays, my posts are dedicated to addressing this difficult question and Ive provided all types of solutions. You can see the collection of Motivation Monday posts here. The topics range from creating to-do lists and suggested time management tips through developing affirmations and alternative ways to look at your situation. Happiness is a state of mind It is difficult to stay motivated when you feel rejected, frustrated or helpless. Unfortunately, these are the emotions inherent in job search. Especially a long-term term one. Staying positive is one of the most important things for you to do, yet often elusive. Some how, some way, you have to re-frame how you view your situation, sort of like the glass of wateris it half full or half empty. Yes, it is possible to retrain your brain. Shaun Achor is an expert on happiness and human potential! I wrote a post and shared a video on how you can absolutely change your attitude- please go read Be Happy, Then Succeed. What Makes You Move Shake? Do you recall those fleeting moments when you were so jazzed and excited about what you were doing that nothing could stop you? Think really hard, because it did happen- maybe not at work. This is what you want to replicate! What made you so excited? What was your motivation or what was driving your enthusiasm? Where was this energy coming from? If you could attack your job search with the same sense of energy, you couldnt fail (or at least it would take you much longer to feel that way!) Tap into your inner motivation, often driven by your set of values, and find a way to make that part of your job search! Mind Over Matter Your search is one big head-game. I would guess that 95% of your success is determined by your mental outlook and only 5% based on the actions you take. Look at your colleagues who have landed jobs. What did they do differently? Probably not much. Look closely at their attitude, confidence, and enthusiasm Remember, employers dont hire just for skills, they hire for enthusiasm, something which they cannot train. When you feel beaten down it is difficult to convey your interest and excitement and this is vizable to everyone you encounter. Ive written about 5 tangible actions you can take immediately to improve your job search mojo!

5 Unexpected Tips for Your Next Interview

5 Unexpected Tips for Your Next Interview Check out my self-study Job Search workbook for more tips!Besides the normal pleasantries of dressing the part, having a copy of your resume, being on time and prepared for the standard why should I hire you? questions…here are some interview tips that may surprise you.Be prepared to ask questions.   I once interviewed Executive Pastry Chef Matthew Peterson from Café Boulud, Palm Beach on my SiriusXM show. He mentioned that when he takes on new people in his kitchen and they don’t ask questions in the first few hours, he tells them to go home.Remember, an interview is as much about them liking you as you liking them. To find out more about your employer, ask if they conduct employee satisfaction surveys and if you can see recent results.Take notice of further ways to connect with the interviewer. Look around and notice a picture, a poster, a painting, a screen saver or even paper-weight that you can relate to. Ask a question about it and connect with the interviewer on another l evel. I have a client who asked the interviewer if he was a Rangers fan after seeing a Stanley Cup picture on the wall. Being a Rangers fan himself, the interviewee immediately made a deeper connection with the interviewer.Find a signature piece for your interview outfit/suit. Wear something that means something to you. It could be a special pair of cufflinks (men) or an heirloom ring (women). Also where relevant, make sure to incorporate an item from the company’s line of clothing or accessories. I knew a women who interviewed at Coach and made sure she traded in her Guess bag for a Coach one for the occasion.Go beyond your resume. If you’re in the interview, the search engine already found all the right key words on your resume. Now is your opportunity to make what you did on that resume come alive in the conversationâ€"make it like a movie that someone wants to watch. Be animated and excited about your story and you will create a more compelling interview. For more interview a dvice, check out my How to Ace a Job Interview video on my YouTube channel.Make the most of yourself, for that is all there is of you. ~Ralph Waldo Emerson
